This week in Help Desk, we did a video conference with a previous student from BHS, who goes to school in Pennsylvania. It was interesting to hear their point of view on technology and how they are going to apply it to their college majors, which is teaching. They were talking about the importance of technology in the classroom and how it helps/hurts the students.
Google Hangout (https://hangouts.google.com) is the web site we used to communicate. We both had to be online for it to work, and they called us. It was important to use this during class, because it demonstrates and allows us to learn how to use it and how we can use it in the future. Becoming familiar with the tool will be helpful in the future to use in a different class to try something new. Google Hangout could be used for meetings if everyone can't make it in, so it comes in handy for multiple scenarios. It was cool to learn about a new website and tool that I can use throughout my life in school, college, and my future career.

During this week, we started using the Mavic Pro Drone. First we started with a mini one, but then upgraded to the more powerful and professional drone. There was an app simulator we used, prior to flying the actual drone itself, that was projected onto the TV from the phone. We were able to get a feel for flying the real drone and using the controls on the remote. The drone comes with an attached camera, that can rotate using the remote controls.
Once we got the actual drone, we decided to test it outside in the front of the school. It was important to have an open space for the first time flying it just in case anything were to go wrong. It was sort of difficult to land it, seeing that it was new for us. It was interesting to fly it around and watch the footage that we captured. The picture was extremely clear and very good quality.

This week we were introduced to http://www.insecam.org. Insecam is a web site where you can view non-password protected security cameras all around the world. It's kind of scary to think that there are so many cameras around the world that are not protected and are open for anyone to view. Located below, there is an image showing the cover page of what you see when you first get to the web site.
On the web site, you can select what category of camera you want to search under. You can filter it by manufacturers, countries, places, cities, or timezones. Once you select a category, it will give you options within that category. Then you select your preference of what you want to view and start viewing the different live security camera footage around the world.
The web site can be a little tricky because there are not a lot of options for cameras under certain categories. It was educational to learn about the password protecting of cameras and how that is important.

This week was Hour of Code Week. My partner and I demonstrated and worked on the Raspberry Pi Software Camera. We chose to do the Raspberry Pi, because it was the most interesting to us. We began working on setting up the camera weeks before the Hour of Code. We spent time setting up a poster that explains how to plug in the correct codes to complete different functions on the camera.
During Hour of Code week, anyone could test out the camera activity. It was pretty neat to see and try different things throughout the week that involved technology and different visitor companies. Once we finished learning more about the Raspberry Pi camera we were satisfied on what new things we learned.

During help desk, I have learned a lot on how we have access to certain tools for our Senior Projects. As seniors, we have to complete a senior project in order to graduate. We can present our projects in videos, websites, or podcasts. I have learned a lot in help desk on how we have the ability to create a podcast using certain techniques. BCAT, Burlington's broadcasting system, can help us a lot with this. I have learned a lot on how to prepare videos and the corrects skills to use in order to create a video or podcast. Something interesting that can be useful for the senior project is a drone. Drone footage can be pretty neat, especially with all of the cool features a drone has. Incorporating these different skills and tools into my senior project would make my project unique and creative. Below I attached links of cool features of the drone.

Burlington High School has been working on drone footage throughout the high school. As students, we have amazing opportunities with technology like this. Some cool features about the drone is you can program it to follow a certain moving object around. So you can program the settings to follow you running around a field and you do not have to control the actual drone with a controller. I attached some drone footage that students have captured.

In Help Desk, during the past few weeks three of my classmates and I have been filming a video on drone safety with acting. My friend Kristina and I are in charge of operating the camera and the filming. 2 of my classmates are the actors and are creating different scenarios of drone safety and how to use the drone. It is very educational and entertaining at the same time.
The first thing I learned was how to set up a tripod. I know it sounds super basic, but there are actually a lot of steps that go into creating a stable base for the camera. Angling the camera at the right spot, so it captures a clean picture, is important. Not only have I learned about setting up a tripod, I have learned a lot about the safety of drones and whoever is around. People can get seriously injured from drones, and it is also important to be super careful with the drone itself, because they can get very expensive.
Important safety precautions include: not flying the drone so close to people and give them personal space, not flying the drone around a cluttered area, making sure not to step on any drones that are on the ground, don't horse around with the drones because it could break something around or the drone itself. There are lots of safety precautions that come along with flying a drone, and that is one of the reasons we are making a film about this.
It is a pretty cool experience to be able to film this and use iMovie to put it all together. I am excited to see the finished product!
